E-Buses: An introduction to charging types, business models and policy recommend

Traffic and congestion remains an issue in urban areas, as pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, and nitric oxides that are emitted by road transport have severe impacts on the environment and human health.

European cities recognise the issue road transport presents in urban areas and are seeking to address this. The sales of e-buses in Europe increased six-fold from 2016 to 2021, currently representing 6.1%. The decarbonisation of public transport systems will be crucial as European countries and cities move towards a net zero economy, and as such, the e-bus market will continue to expand.

The solution booklet created by the Smart Cities Marketplace presents insights on the potential and barriers for the scale-up of electric bus-lines from a technical, financial, social and governance perspective. Expert interviews with different stakeholders were conducted in order to gather experiences from various EU, national, regional and local projects in different European countries.

As a result, a comprehensive guide has been developed for cities and public transport operators who want to start diving into the topic and to expand their knowledge with the latest findings of the Smart Cities Marketplace community.
